Windows XP All-In-One Desk Reference For Dummies
If you're looking for a Windows XP book that'll give you the straight scoop - but not bury you in a ton of technical details - hey, have I got a book for you! Windows XP All-In-One Desk Reference For Dummies rates as the book you'll reach for again and again. Whether you're burning CDs or coping with Klez, this book will see you through. Think of it as your reference of first resort. Available at all good bookstores, or online just about everywhere.

Another Botched Windows XP Security Patch

If you had the misfortune to download and install the patch for Microsoft's MS03-013 security bulletin last week, you may have discovered that it, uh, leaves a bit to be desired. Apparently if you're running any of several major anti-virus packages, there's a fair chance that installing the MS03-013 security patch will slow your PC down to a crawl.

So far, the only solution put forward by anyone at Microsoft (that I'm aware of anyway) involves disabling your anti-virus software. HA!

Far better - disable the lousy patch:

> Click Start|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs

> Scroll way down to Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q81493, and click on it

> Click Remove, then Next.

When the uninstaller is done, click Finish, and Windows XP will re-boot.

Don't install the MS03-013 security patch (Windows Update calls it “811493: Security Update (Windows XP)”) until Microsoft fixes it. That may be a while. MS hasn’t even acknowledged the problem publicly. The main Knowledge Base article was updated on April 21 - long after Microsoft knew about the problem - but there's no mention of the slowdown.

'Trustworthy computing' still has some ways to go.

Don't Let Windows XP Update Itself Automatically

I strongly recommend that you not allow Windows XP to update itself automatically - precisely because the updates can't be 100% relied upon.

Far better to wait a week or two when a patch comes out, then apply it when time permits.

At the very least:

> Click Start, right-click on My Computer, then pick Properties | Automatic Updates

> Check the box that says Notify Me Before Downloading Any Updates And Notify Me Again Before Installing Them on My Computer

When Windows Update notifies you that you have updates, I'd suggest that you start the Wizard, click Notify Me Later, and pick 3 days. Then the next time Windows Update notifies you, pick 3 more days.
